Artemis: The Wild Woman Who Hunts Her Own Path

One of my favourite books was given to me by one of my best friend's Sarah and it's a book by Jean Shinoda Bolen on the Goddess Artemis.

Artemis is not a goddess who waits to be found. She is the wild woman who hunts her own path, carving trails through the wilderness of her desires, instincts, and truths. As Shinoda Bolen describes, Artemis embodies the "indomitable spirit" in every woman—the part that refuses to be subdued, tamed, or silenced . She is the protector of the vulnerable, the fierce advocate for justice, and the embodiment of independence.

In a world that often demands conformity, Artemis stands as a beacon of authenticity. She is the woman who listens to the whispers of her own soul, who trusts her instincts over societal expectations. Her realm is the wilderness, both external and internal, where she roams freely, accompanied by her nymph companions and guided by the moonlight . Artemis teaches us that true strength lies not in domination, but in self-reliance and inner clarity.

Artemis is also the embodiment of sisterhood. She surrounds herself with women who share her values and vision, creating circles of support and empowerment. In these circles, there is no competition, only collaboration. Artemis women understand that their power multiplies when they stand together, united in purpose and spirit.

Yet, Artemis is not without her shadows. When her boundaries are crossed or her values compromised, she can become merciless, channeling her anger into righteous action. Her rage is not destructive but transformative, a force that burns away what no longer serves her truth. Embracing this aspect of Artemis allows women to reclaim their voice and power, using their anger as a catalyst for change.

To embody Artemis is to honour your own path, to trust your instincts, and to stand fiercely in your truth. She is the call to the wild within you, urging you to step into the unknown with courage and conviction. As Bolen notes, Artemis is the archetype of the activist, environmentalist, and therapist motivated to help the vulnerable .

She is the reminder that you are not here to fit into the world, but to reshape it according to your vision. Embrace your inner Artemis, and let her lead you into the wilderness of your own becoming.
