Reclaiming Sexual Power at a Later Stage

Naked at Our Age by Sharon Wachsler is a memoir I read while doing my sex therapy training. I thought it was very cool because it dives into the realities of aging, body image, and intimacy, but with a twist of humor, vulnerability, and a whole lot of real talk. Wachsler, in her 50s when she wrote the book, bravely explores how the changes that come with aging—physically, emotionally, and mentally—affect how we see ourselves and interact with the world. She tackles subjects that often get swept under the rug, like sexuality and self-esteem, breaking the silence on issues many older women face as they confront societal pressures surrounding the aging body.

Wachsler doesn’t hold back in sharing her own personal experiences, reflecting on how her shifting body has impacted her relationships—with herself and with others. She talks candidly about the awkwardness, the beauty, the frustration, and the growth that come with accepting that your body is no longer 20, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less worthy of love or desire. There’s a refreshing honesty about the challenges of holding on to a sense of attractiveness and sexual confidence as you age, while also learning to embrace the inevitable changes that come with time.

But here’s the kicker: the book doesn’t just look at the struggles. It highlights how intimacy and connection don’t have to stop when you hit a certain age. Wachsler’s exploration of sexuality in later life is empowering, shedding light on how love, lust, and meaningful relationships can still thrive long after the conventional “youth-centric” phase of life. Her reflections reveal that growing older doesn’t mean losing the ability to have a fulfilling sex life, even if society tends to ignore or dismiss older women’s sexuality altogether.

At its heart, Naked at Our Age is a celebration—of aging, of reclaiming sexual power, and of refusing to let society define our value. Wachsler challenges the stigma around aging, encouraging readers to embrace their bodies, own their experiences, and continue to live life with authenticity and zest. It’s a candid, funny, and empowering look at the process of getting older, one that breaks the taboos and opens up a much-needed conversation about the beauty and vitality that doesn’t disappear with age—it just transforms. If anything, this memoir shows that aging can be an adventure worth celebrating, not something to be feared or hidden.
